What a pro does

There are only a few ways a sump pump fails and a plumber checks them in order: the float switch, the impeller, the check valve and the discharge. A float caught against the pit wall or a power cord accounts for a lot of the calls where the pump simply never started. Rapid short cycling usually points somewhere else, at a check valve letting the discharge fall straight back into the pit each time the pump stops. Snowmelt is the season that finds every weakness in Colorado. Ground still frozen at the surface won't take the water, so weeks of accumulation arrive at the foundation over a few warm days and a pump that's idled through the winter has to work continuously. Discharge routing matters as much as the pump does. A line that ends too close to the house, or one that's frozen shut at the outlet, sends the same water back around to the pit, and a frozen discharge in early spring will make a perfectly good pump look dead. The plumber looks at the whole path rather than only the unit in the hole.

Why does the pump run constantly in spring and barely at all in summer?

Snowmelt has to go somewhere and frozen ground won't absorb it. Weeks of accumulated snow can release over a few days, all of it running along the surface until it reaches a foundation. That's the heaviest load a pump sees all year, arriving right after its longest idle stretch.

Can the discharge line freeze?

It's one of the more common winter faults. Ice forms at the outlet where the line meets outside air, and once it's plugged the pump pushes against a closed pipe. The motor may run perfectly and still move nothing, which reads as a failed pump from inside the basement.

What does a backup pump actually protect against?

Power loss during the exact storm that needs the pump, mostly, along with a primary that fails mid season. Whether it's warranted comes down to how much water the pit normally handles and what's finished in the basement below the water line.
